“Ego Death” by ReefKillsPop

This weekend the Luxe Lab crew went to ReefKillsPop’s art show”EgoDeath” at Buckwild Gallery.
Reef who is originally from LA started getting serious about his work in 2010. He describes his work as chaotic, but as stated in his press release “…there is a method to ReefKillsPop’s madness.” he continues “That’s supposed to be the point…it’s not supposed to be, ‘I’m gonna paint a pretty picture today,’ the approach I have when I go up to a painting is: you step up to the canvas like Mike Tyson steps up to the ring, just ‘Pow!’ Just rage, power, not focusing on technique, not being nice and neat, but you just wanna fuck shit up.”

Ani Yapundzhyan recently interviewed Reef and offered us some insight.

Ani: You’re introverted. basically wrapped up at home all day, painting, 24/7 if you could. How does that contribute to what comes out in your art? How does your daily ritual contribute to what shows up in your art?

Reef: It’s chaos. So that’s what shows in the art. its not like i have a specific vision, everything is a process and its all chaos. The whole thing is that i’m not concerned with how it looks, or i’m not necessarily trying to come out with a message, there’s nothing political behind it. There might be some bits and pieces in the art that might have a certain message portioning to something in particular, but its basically just chaos.

A: Why is there so much chaos inside of you?

R: (laughs) Because I’m processing the conflict inside of me, in my psyche…

A: What are you conflicted about?

R: Everything. My place in the world, how I feel about life.

A: what’s your place in the world?

R: I’ve always been at odds with everything, still feeling outside the box, getting older and you still feel like you’re an outcast and shit. It’s an internal process, so, I’m stepping up to a canvas to purge myself out of all this shit. And there’s so much, that’s why every day I have to do this to keep my sanity.

“Ego Death” is showing at Buckwild Gallery located at 1284 Venice Blvd. until November 16th.
